There are so many great classic books it is hard to know what one to read first. I recently realized that I had not yet read the original classic horror book Dracula by Bram Stoker. I’ve seen many movies based on this famous vampire character but had not read the actual book.
I’m actually not a horror movie/book fan but thought I’d give this one a try. (confession – I am a total chicken when it comes to horror movies so I wasn’t sure if I could handle Dracula). I was pleasantly surprised while reading the original Bram Stoker story of Dracula how much I really enjoyed the story.
The story is mainly told through letters and personal journal entries by the characters as they encounter Count Dracula. Here is a quick synopsis of the story:
Dracula
The story unfolds during the late 19th century as Jonathan Harker, a young English legal practitioner, travels to the castle of Count Dracula, in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania, to finalize the sale of England’s Carfax Abbey to Count Dracula. Harker upon meeting Count Dracula finds him a strange and eerie man – with a dark secret. Through a series of personal journal entries and letters, Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, Mina Murray, and Dr. Von Helsing learn of Dracula’s secret – that he is a dangerous and powerful creature who’s lived for hundreds of years and possesses powers no mortal can claim and is planning to find new blood in populous London in order to spread the curse of the undead. One thing is for sure, Dracula must be stopped – but how?
This edition includes an author’s biographical account and listing of novels and short stories written by Bram Stoker.
If you are looking for a great classic novel with a “horror” story theme this is the book for you. Also, the ebook includes the author biography and a bonus story “Dracula’s Guest” by Bram Stoker.
