What I’m Reading

in reverie

There are so many great classic books it is hard to know what one to read first. I recently realized that I had not yet read the original classic horror book Dracula by Bram Stoker. I’ve seen many movies based on this famous vampire character but had not read the actual book.

I’m actually not a horror movie/book fan but thought I’d give this one a try. (confession – I am a total chicken when it comes to horror movies so I wasn’t sure if I could handle Dracula). I was pleasantly surprised while reading the original Bram Stoker story of Dracula how much I really enjoyed the story.

The story is mainly told through letters and personal journal entries by the characters as they encounter Count Dracula. Here is a quick synopsis of the story:

STORIES

“There was one great tomb more lordly than all the rest; huge it was, and nobly proportioned. On it was but one word, DRACULA.” ― Bram Stoker, Dracula

Dracula

The story unfolds during the late 19th century as Jonathan Harker, a young English legal practitioner, travels to the castle of Count Dracula, in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania, to finalize the sale of England’s Carfax Abbey to Count Dracula. Harker upon meeting Count Dracula finds him a strange and eerie man – with a dark secret. Through a series of personal journal entries and letters, Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, Mina Murray, and Dr. Von Helsing learn of Dracula’s secret – that he is a dangerous and powerful creature who’s lived for hundreds of years and possesses powers no mortal can claim and is planning to find new blood in populous London in order to spread the curse of the undead. One thing is for sure, Dracula must be stopped – but how?

This edition includes an author’s biographical account and listing of novels and short stories written by Bram Stoker.

If you are looking for a great classic novel with a “horror” story theme this is the book for you. Also, the ebook includes the author biography and a bonus story “Dracula’s Guest” by Bram Stoker.

This version is available here on Kindle and Nook.

Dracula’s Guest and Other Weird Stories:

“Dracula’s Guest” follows an Englishman on a visit to Munich before leaving for Transylvania. It is Walpurgis Night, and in spite of the hotelier’s warning to not be late back, the young man later leaves his carriage and wanders toward the direction of an abandoned “unholy” village. An intense storm forces the Englishman to seek shelter whereupon he finds himself seeking shelter in the doorway of a tomb. As he does so, the bronze door of the tomb opens under his weight and a flash of forked lightning shows the interior – and a “beautiful woman with rounded cheeks and red lips, seemingly sleeping on a bier”. The force of the following thunder peal throws the Englishman from the doorway as another lightning bolt strikes the iron spike, destroying the tomb and the now screaming woman inside.

The Englishman’s troubles are not quite over, as he discovers that his rescuers were forewarned by their employer, Dracula of the dangers from snow and wolves at night.

“There was one great tomb more lordly than all the rest; huge it was, and nobly proportioned. On it was but one word, DRACULA.”
― Bram Stoker, Dracula

An exciting adventure about a very celebrated pirate!

The Pirate’s Pocket Book by Dion Clayton Calthrop is a  curious and exciting adventure about a very celebrated pirate.  He was so celebrated that the newspapers—of that time—always said nice things about him, and always knew what he was doing before he did himself. As he was a very truthful man, he did the things, so that the editors might not get into trouble. Which was kind. By which I do not mean that he was always kind.

Be warned, this entertaining tale may cause readers moments of loud convulsive laughter as they follow along with Tom Tomb and his pirating ways! Simple pictures enhance the story by bringing the characters to life so, sit back, get cozy and enjoy reading this wonderful story.
